Description
A comforting stuffing recipe that complements any main dish and is perfect for holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of crusty bread (such as sourdough or French), cubed
- 1 cup of onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup of celery, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
- 2 cups of vegetable or chicken stock
- 1 tablespoon of fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried sage)
- 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1 tablespoon of parsley, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: 1 cup of diced apples or cranberries
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lay the cubed bread on a baking sheet and toast for 10-15 minutes.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and celery and sauté for 5-7 minutes until translucent.
- Combine the toasted bread with the sautéed mixture, fresh herbs, seasoning, and optional ingredients.
- Pour in the stock gradually, ensuring the bread absorbs the moisture without becoming mushy.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish, cover with aluminum foil, and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
- Let it sit for a few minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld.
Notes
For healthier alternatives, swap butter for olive oil or use gluten-free bread. You can also prepare the stuffing a day ahead and store it in the fridge.
