Description
A comforting classic, homemade brown gravy elevates any meal with its rich, savory flavor. Perfect for smothering over mashed potatoes or drizzling over fresh biscuits.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/4 cup of butter or ghee
- 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour
- 2 cups of beef or chicken broth (homemade or store-bought)
- Salt, to taste
- Ground black pepper, to taste
- Optional: onion powder, garlic powder, or herbs like thyme and parsley for extra flavor
Instructions
- Start by melting the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Keep an eye on it to avoid burning; you want it just melted and bubbly.
- Once the butter has melted, sprinkle in the flour. Whisk continuously for about 2-3 minutes. This is your roux, and it should be a nice golden brown.
- Gradually whisk in the broth. It’s important to add the liquid slowly to avoid lumps. Keep whisking until the mixture is smooth.
- Let the gravy simmer for about 5-10 minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency.
- Season to taste with salt, pepper, and any optional spices. Taste as you go, and adjust the seasonings to bring out the flavor.
- Once your gravy is nice and velvety, remove it from heat.
Notes
For a healthier version, consider using olive oil instead of butter and whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour. You can also use low-sodium broth to reduce salt content.
