Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil for frying
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Optional: sliced mushrooms
Instructions
- Begin by mixing the ground beef with breadcrumbs, chopped onions, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and the egg in a large bowl.
- Shape the mixture into oval patties, roughly 1 inch thick.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet.
- After removing the patties, set them aside on a plate.
- Lower the heat to medium and melt the butter in the same skillet.
- Sprinkle the flour into the skillet, stirring constantly for about a minute.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps.
- Keep stirring until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon gravy over them.
Notes
Aim for uniform patties for even cooking and allow them to rest briefly after cooking to retain moisture.
