- 3 to 4 medium-sized russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
- 2 cups whole milk or heavy cream
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- A pinch of ground nutmeg (optional)
- Breadcrumbs or additional cheese (optional topping)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Peel and thinly slice your potatoes using a mandoline or a sharp knife.
- Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until soft.
- Sprinkle the flour into the mixture, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in the milk until thickened, cooking for 5 to 7 minutes.
- Stir in the grated cheese until melted and smooth.
- Layer the sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish, pouring cheese sauce over each layer.
- Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle on top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove</strong foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden.
